sleep_apneaAre you always tired?  Do you feel like you never get a good night’s sleep?  Has a family member or spouse complained about your snoring?  You may have sleep apnea – one of the most undiagnosed health issues today. Studies show that sleep apnea can lead to severe health issues, including heart attack and stroke, so it should not go untreated.

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which your breathing becomes blocked or obstructed during sleep or you truly stop breathing!  This can happen as little as 5 times an hour to more than 50 times an hour depending on the severity of the disease.  You may not realize that you have sleep apnea, but your partner may notice some or all of the following signs:

  • Stop breathing
  • Snore loudly
  • Gasp or choke
  • Toss and turn

Or you may notices some of the following symptoms yourself:

  • Not feeling rested after sleep
  • Feeling drowsy during the day
  • Waking up with a headache

In order to best determine if you have sleep apnea, let Dr. Peter know of your symptoms and he may order a complete sleep study either at home or at a special sleep center.  Though there are a number of treatments available, the most common is the use of a CPAP machine while you sleep.  If, for any reason, you are unable to tolerate a CPAP machine or don’t comply with this treatment, then Dr. Charles Peter in Clearwater, Florida can suggest alternative treatment with the Silent Nite® appliance. The Silent Nite® appliance gently repositions your lower jaw while you sleep thus lessening or even preventing the effects of sleep apnea and snoring.
